James Harper is currently professor emeritus of poultry science at OSU, following a tenure from 1942-82. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Oregon State College and The Pennsylvania State College in 1940 and 1942. In 1945, he was placed in charge of developing a 50 acre turkey research facility on Harrison Boulevard for the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station. His research, which included ways to improve the growth and reproductive qualities of turkeys, was instrumental in aiding development of the Oregon and national turkey industries. He authored numerous scientific publications pertaining to turkey biology. He is a recipient of the National Turkey Federation Research Award, the Hamilton-Lyons-Mitchell Award and the Diamond Pioneer Award.
