Jack Long was born in Salem, Oregon, and raised in Linn County. Jack obtained his B.S. degree in animal science at Oregon State University in 1960. He was first active in the sheep industry. Jack served as president of the Oregon Purebred Sheep Breeders and as director of the American Shropshire Breeder Association. In later years, he and his wife, Lurlyn, started the family business, J & L Nursery Co., Inc. Jack has provided leadership in that industry by serving as president of the Northwest Horticultural Congress, president of the Oregon Association of Nurserymen, and president of the American Association of Nurserymen. More recently, he served as president of the Oregon Garden Foundation for five years. He has been a director of West Coast Bank since 1990. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of CARET for OSU in Washington, D.C.
