History of The Withycombe Club
In the fall of 2003, the Department of Animal Sciences decided to reorganize the Withycombe Club, formerly a student organization honoring distinguished alums and industry members, into an annual event at which the Department honors alumni or members of the industry who have served the department or industry in an exemplary manner. Pictures and short summaries of the life achievements of each member inducted into the Withycombe Club are displayed in Withycombe Hall, as an inspiration for future generations of students in the animal sciences. All of these members are part of the heritage of the Department of Animal Sciences at Oregon State University. This proud heritage began when three animal husbandry departments (Animal, Dairy and Poultry), along with Agronomy, were first formed in the College of Agriculture in 1907.
At the charter luncheon of the Withycombe Club held on May 28th, 2004, all 51 Withycombe honorees from previous years, in addition to 18 new honorees, were inducted into the club as charter members. Enthusiasm for the luncheon was strong from the start, but surpassed all expectations as time went by. Total attendance was over 300, including charter members, their family and friends, representatives, college guests, and Animal Sciences faculty, staff, and students. Perhaps the greatest affirmation of the event came from charter member Dr. Walther Ott, aged 92, who came all the way from New Jersey, and invited 30 family and friends from Oregon to join him! It was wonderful to see so many friends from years gone by, and to see them reminisce with one another. It was a privilege to honor those who have contributed so much to the animal sciences and livestock industries.
