Controlling Bovine Virus Diarrhea (BVD) is no small task, key to the success of a control program is screening and biosecurity (which includes vaccination). Participants will have the opportunity to screen their cattle herds for BVD PI animals and have assistance in writing biosecurity plans. The prevalence of BVD in the state of Oregon will also be documented.
Implementation of sound biosecurity practices on Oregon ranches will decrease the risk of exposure and spread of economically detrimental diseases. Written biosecurity plans will not only improve herd health on the ranch and in the feedlot, they will also increase consumer confidence that Oregon produced beef is reared to ensure a wholesome product and animal well being. Creating a BVD control program in the state of Oregon to demonstrate the benefit of biosecurity will result in increased marketability and potential premiums for cattle sold as BVD PI free.
