Function:                

This position is responsible for planning and performing all duties associated with Heifer Ranch’s livestock enterprises.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Farm Manager in developing livestock training programs and short and long-term plans for the Livestock Department.
  2. Coordinate and perform the work of the Livestock Department to maximize the efficient use of resources, demonstrate sustainable practices, and ensure smooth operations.
  3. Supervise and manage livestock volunteers.
  4. Provide hands-on livestock training for Heifer Ranch staff. This will include training and supervising livestock volunteers in daily feeding and milking chores, animal care and equipment repair.
  5. Manage all aspects of Heifer Ranch’s livestock enterprises including selection, nutrition, heath care, record keeping, breeding, marketing, placements, demonstrations, etc.
  6. Manage all aspects of Heifer Ranch’s rotational grazing program including: evaluation, fertilization and seeding of hay and pasture lands; construction and maintenance of temporary and permanent fences; placement and maintenance of temporary and permanent watering systems; and the development and implementation of grazing plans.
  7. Utilizing livestock resources, teach hands-on experiential modules for Heifer Ranch program participants and visitors.
  8. Assist the Farm Manager in the preparation and monitoring of departmental budgets.
  9. Ensure compliance with the requirements of the Animal Welfare Act and Heifer Ranch’s Class C Exhibitor License.
  10. Maintain a growing knowledge of animal husbandry methodologies and regulations.
  11. Maintain a working knowledge on sustainable and organic farming practices.
  12. May perform other job-related responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree plus two (2) years’ job-related experience. 

OR

High school diploma/GED plus six (6) years’ job-related experience.

 

Most Critical Proficiencies:

  • Proven knowledge and experience in field of animal husbandry.
  • Knowledge and experience in the construction and maintenance of livestock fences, watering systems, and facilities.
  • Knowledge of implementing sustainable farming practices.
  • Working knowledge of livestock issues and policies.
  • Knowledge of income and expense budget preparation and monitoring.
  • Ability to support Heifer’s mission, Cornerstones Model and values.

Essential Job Functions and Physical Demands:

  • Team leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to train and work cooperatively with a diverse staff.
  • Interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to relate to individuals and groups diplomatically and tactfully.
  • Ability to assist in the development and implementation of educational programs and strategies leading to growth.
  • Ability to work unsupervised and with others to meet deadlines.
  • Willing to do heavy, hard and frequently repetitive work with the ability to lift up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms).
  • Willing and able to work outdoors during inclement weather, especially within the hot and humid conditions of Arkansas summers.
  • Must be willing to adapt to the flexibility of daily and seasonal scheduling.
  • Must be a non-smoker in order to help eliminate transmission of mosaic and other viruses.
