Horse Center Teaching Schedule - Winter 2008

Most of the horses you see in our barns are used as teaching horses for OSU students. There are approximately 10 horses owned by OSU, including a riding string, broodmares, and foals. Facilities on the 250 acre farm include indoor and outdoor arenas, an outdoor riding track, a 38 stall main barn, 7 stall staff barn, 12 stall research/foaling barn, 12 stall breezeway barn, turnout pastures and paddocks, a hay barn, and hay fields.

Limited stalls are available for student boarders whom are accepted through an application process. Board, which includes two feedings per day and bedding is $300/month for students. Both alfalfa and grass hay are available, as well as, a quality grain ration. Please go to the Horse Boarding page for more details.

The OSU Equine Science program offers a comprehensive course of study for students interested in a career in the horse industry. Riding classes offered at the Horse Center include Intermediate Horsemanship, Dressage, Jumping, Reining, and Working Cowhorse.

A unique Colt Training class is offered Winter and Spring term, in which students start a two-year-old under saddle, and then on cattle. The highlight of this class is when students see their hard work pay off, as the colts are sold in the Annual Colts-in-Training Sale held each June.

In addition to the riding classes, the following lecture and laboratory courses: Equine Evaluation, Equine Marketing, Stable Management, Equine Exercise Physiology, Equine Nutrition, and Equine Reproduction.
