The Swine Center is located one-half mile west of campus on Campus Way. The current program involves 10 White Line sows mated to Yorkshire or terminal sires. The management system includes complete confinement; lagoon manure disposal; all in/all out farrowing system; SPF-like health maintenance program, and the use of A.I. for genetic introductions. The Spring farrowed litters are sold in April at the Department's Youth Field Day as county fair project pigs. The Fall born litters are used as replacement and for teaching purposes Fall and Winter terms.
The herd provides animal resources for teaching students, producers, 4-H, FFA, and County Agent demonstrations; for research in nutrition, physiology, and multiple aspects of swine production. Cooperative, interrelated usage of animals and facilities, and associations among involved faculty and graduate students are encouraged. Inter-departmental experimental opportunities are available. Upon request, animals are sold for non-OSU research use and males and females are sold to producers for breeding herd uses.
