H.H. Gibson Memorial Scholarship Oregon State University
The family of H. H. Gibson, desiring to encourage students of Agriculture Education to further their training in an agricultural curriculum of their choice, will offer two (2) scholarships at $500 each at Oregon State University.
Eligibility and Procedure
1. The agriculture scholarships will be granted to applicants who have completed the agriculture education program in their high school and rank in the upper one-third (1/3) of their graduating class.
2. Applicants are to be judged on the basis of their leadership ability, scholastic achievement, citizenship, cooperation, and financial need.
3. Applicants should also include a letter giving the applicant's high school and agriculture education record, a statement of their future intent, transcript of grades, and letters of recommendation from their high school principal and agriculture education instructor.
4. The Agricultural Education Scholarship Committee, including the Head Teacher Educator at Oregon State University, will select the recipients of the scholarship after review of student applications and personal interviews at the State FFA Convention. The names of the recipients will be announced during the FFA Convention.
5. The Head Teacher Educator will provide the recipients applications to the office of the Head Advisor for the College of Agricultural Science, where processing of paperwork, contacting the recipients to confirm selection, and notifying donor(s) of the newest recipients will be accomplished.
Purpose
The Thornton FFA Scholarships has been established to encourage FFA members in the state of Oregon to pursue higher educational opportunities in agriculture with the ultimate goal of seeking a career in agriculture, not limited to production agriculture, but to include agribusiness and veterinary medicine.
Criteria
1. Student selection shall be limited to current and former members of the FFA who graduated or are to graduate from a high school having completed at least two (2) years in Agricultural Science and Technology Program (Vocational Agriculture). Transfer students to Oregon are eligible if they have completed at least two (2) years in an Agricultural Science and Technology Program, their last year being in Oregon. They must be Oregon high school graduates.
2. Students currently enrolled and attending an Oregon community college or university (Oregon State University or Eastern Oregon State College) pursuing a career in agriculture, not limited to production agriculture, but to include agribusiness and veterinary medicine.
3. If equally qualified, a preference shall be given to students from the Yamhill-Carlton FFA program, then to students from Yamhill and Polk counties, then to students throughout the state of Oregon.
4. Recipients are eligible to receive the Thornton FFA Scholarship three (3) times if they reapply and are reselected.
5. Students must maintain a full course load each term (12 credits or more on the quarter system) to remain eligible for this scholarship.
6. Agricultural interest, scholarship, initiative, and determination as evidenced through school, jobs, community activities, and FFA participation will be major deciding factors in the final selection.
Award Amount
The Thornton FFA Scholarship award shall be in the amount of $500 on an annual basis. Student recipients will receive their scholarship award in three credit payments (for the quarter system) and two credit payments (for the semester system) through the registration process at their institution.
Selection Process
The selection committee will be composed of representatives of Oregon State University, Oregon FFA Association members, and chapter FFA advisors.
J.B. Thomas Memorial Scholarship
The J.B. Thomas Memorial Scholarship will offer at least one $500 scholarship to an eligible FFA member. The requirements for the J.B. Thomas Memorial Scholarship are as follows:
1. Recipients may select any community college, junior college, or university in Oregon.
2. Recipients must enroll in an agricultural course of study.
3. Recipients must have completed two years of a Supervised Agricultural Experience Program while enrolled in Agriculture Education and be a member of the Oregon FFA Association, and a graduating senior at the end of the school year selected as a winner.
4. More than one scholarship may be awarded at the discretion of the Oregon FFA Association.
The family of J.B. Thomas, desiring to encourage students of Agriculture Education to further their training in an agricultural curriculum of their choice, annually offer this scholarship.
J.B. Thomas taught Vocational Agriculture for 30 years in Oregon - 5 years in Amity and 25 years in Hillsboro. He received several honorary chapter degrees, and the Honorary State Farmer Degree. His chapters were always very competitive. His chapter was the first to send a Poultry Judging Team to the National Poultry Congress and his team was also the first to represent Oregon in the National Soil Judging Contest. Mr. Thomas will always be remembered for his love and concern for youth.
