Salt Institute 2002-03 Tony J. Cunha Graduate Research Award

To promote an understanding of the role of salt and/or salt as a carrier for trace minerals in animal nutrition, the Salt Institute will award $1,500 for the 2002-03 academic year to a graduate-level researcher for an investigation on this topic. Selection of the winning proposal will be made by an expert panel. Applications are due May 31, 2002.

The 2002 award will be presented on or about August 1 to the student whose proposed research project shows the greatest promise of furthering our understanding of the role of salt in animal diets or teh benefits of salt as a carrier for trace minerals. As examples, past award recipients submitted the following research projects: Sodium and chloride insufficiency in the two-week old weaned pig; Influence of salt mineral supplementations on heifers and new calves; Salt and trace mineral supplementation of stocker cattle grazing fescue; The effects of varying levels of feed grade and purified sea salt on the performance of broiler chicks; The utilization of salt as a carrier of trace minerals; and Salt deficiency in early age broilers. The winning proposal will be determined by a panel of experts.
