The following is a list of scholarships available to students currently enrolled* in the Department of Animal Sciences. Applications for these scholarships are available either in Withycombe Room 114 or at the web site listed. Specific criteria, approximate amount of each scholarship and selection procedures are listed. For additional information, or inquiries, contact Dr. Thomas F. Departmental Undergraduate Scholarships and Awards - Applications Due: April 6, 2009. (Amounts may vary from posted values)

Animal Sciences Department Head Scholarship

Award: $1,000

Purposes/Requirements: To support a student that has demonstrated academic success, leadership in extra-curricular activities both in college and high school, and has a commitment to a career in Animal Sciences.

Class: Junior.

Procedure: Selected by Department Head via ANS Scholarship Committee.

Prosser Clark Memorial Scholarship

Award: $1,000


Purposes/Requirements: To encourage students to pursue studies with emphasis in livestock. Financial need will be considered and preference given to graduate of an Oregon high school.

Class/GPA: Completed at least one term at OSU and 90 hours total; GPA not set.

Procedure: Selected by Department Head via ANS Scholarship Committee; representative of Prosser Clark Fund may choose to participate in selection.
 

Harold P. Ewalt Memorial Scholarship

Award: $500, awarded at the annual Oregon Dairymen's Association meeting, late winter


Requirements: To a deserving student in a dairy oriented field.

Class: Sophomore, Junior or Senior

Procedure: Selected by Department Head via ANS Scholarship Committee.
 

Jess Hanson Poultry Scholarships

Award: $1,000 scholarships (one for each class level)

Purpose/Requirements: To support promising students interested in Poultry Science. Incoming freshmen must be from Benton County high schools. GPA 3.00. Continuing students must maintain 3.00 GPA to repeat, one academic year residence, and two letters of recommendation required.

Class: Freshman, sophomore, junior, senior

Procedure: Selected by Department Head via ANS Scholarship Committee.

Don and Ginger Helfer Scholarship

Award: $1,000 undergraduate or graduate

Purpose: The Don and Ginger Helfer Scholarship is established by Don Helfer, D.V.M., and his wife, Ginger Helfer. The Helfers would like to assist students (undergraduate and graduate level) in obtaining a degree from Oregon State University, enabling them to pursue a career with the poultry industry. The focus of the scholarship is on undergraduate and graduate level support for students in the College of Agricultural Sciences who are studying Animal Production with a Poultry emphasis.

Criteria:

1. The recipient meets the following grade point average criteria: 2.75 or better for undergraduates, 3.0 for graduates.

2. The recipient must be an undergraduate or a graduate student enrolled in the College of Agricultural Sciences or its related programs at Oregon State University.

3. The recipient must be studying Animal Sciences or Pre-Vet with a Poultry interest or emphasis.

4. Recruitment for the Don and Ginger Helfer Scholarship will be from the students actively involved in the Poultry Science Club.

Procedure: Selected by Department Head via ANS Scholarship Committee.

Adams Family Scholarship

Award: $1,000

Purpose: The Adams Family Scholarship is established by Holyoke P Adams and his wife, Jean. The Adams would like to provide support for Oregon State University, students preparing for careers in the food production industry.

Criteria:

1. The recipient is a full-time undergraduate student majoring in Animal Sciences or Crop and Soil Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences.

2. The recipient shall have junior or senior class standing while receiving the scholarship.

3. The recipient demonstrates outstanding scholastic achievement worthy of recognition as judged by the scholarship selection committee.

4.. The recipient is planning a career in the Agriculture food production industry in one of the following areas upon graduation from the university: production, processing, safety, or marketing.

5. Financial need may be considered but is not required

Procedure: The recipient of this scholarship shall be determined by the Animal Sciences Scholarship Committee in collaboration with the Crop & Soil Sciences Scholarship Committee. The scholarship will alternate on a yearly basis between departments, ANS for 2009-10.

I.R. Jones Memorial Book Award

Award: $150 at the OSU Bookstore


Purpose/Requirements: To assist student of Animal Sciences, based on scholarship, leadership and participation in dairy activities.

Class: Sophomore, Junior or Senior

Procedure: Selected by Department Head via ANS Scholarship Committee.

 

Parviz Kamangar Animal Sciences Scholarship

Award: $1,000 (total of 6 awarded: 2 sophomore, 2 junior, 2 senior)


Purpose/Requirements: To assist the department and promising students in Animal Sciences. Financial need will be considered but will not be the deciding factor. May be repeated.

Class/GPA: Min. 45 hrs (Soph.) and 3.00 GPA

Procedure: Selected by Department Head via ANS Scholarship Committee.
 

Charles M. Fischer - Oregon Fryer Commission Scholarship

Award: $1,000


Purpose/Requirements: To support two promising students with an active interest in Poultry Science - must maintain a 2.75 GPA.

Class: Undergraduate in ANS with a Poultry Option

Procedure: Selected by Department Head via ANS Scholarship Committee.

Pacific Egg and Poultry Association for 2009-10

Awards: Number varies per year; incoming freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Purpose/Requirements: Promote and support students who have an active interest in careers within the Poultry area.

Procedure: The 2009-10 application form (no earlier version accepted) will be available for downloading at http://www.pacificegg.org/scholarship.html and must be returned to the ANS Poultry Program, Withycombe 114 (Due: To be Announced at a future date) for validation, endorsement, also obtain an official transcript, and submission to PePa. Selection is by the PePa Scholarship Committee and recipients announced at it's annual meeting.

Awards for 2008-09 were announced at the Annual PEPA Meeting, March 6, 2008.

Note: Incoming Freshman only , PePa Applications (can be obtained from PePa (http://www.pacificegg.org/scholarship.html )and are sent directly to the PePa Foundation, 1521 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814, (916)441-0801 and must arrive no later than: To be Announced at a future date.

Larry Mirosh Memorial Scholarship

The Larry W. Mirosh Memorial Scholarship endowment was established in 1997 to recognize Larry W. Mirosh's dedication and service to the Poultry Program at Oregon State University, the poultry industry, and the poultry 4-H and FFA youth programs. Larry was a valuable participant in the poultry science effort for many years, involving himself in all facets of the land-grant mission - teaching, research, and extension.


Award: $225

Purpose/Requirements: To attract new students who have 4-H or FFA backgrounds to the poultry program in the Animal Sciences Department. Recipient must be an incoming freshman who participated in 4-H and/or FFA poultry programs during or prior to high school, have an active interest in poultry, and must demonstrate financial need.

Class/GPA: Freshman in poultry / 3.00 high school GPA

Procedure: Selected by the Department Head via ANS Scholarship Committee.

    Jess Hanson Scholarship

    Awards: MAg $4000; MS $5,000; Ph.D. $6,000


    Purpose/Requirements: To support a promising graduate student in Poultry Science, 3.00 GPA, must be a resident student for one academic year; requires two letters of recommendation.

Hogg-Hubbard Fellowship

Award: $1,000


Purpose/Requirements: To support graduate studies relating to sheep science. BS in Agriculture must be from US university.

Class: Graduate (MS or Ph.D.)

Procedure: Selected by Department Head via ANS Scholarship Committee.

Parviz Kamangar Fellowship in Animal Sciences

Award: $3,000 annually


Purpose/Requirement: To assist an MS or Ph.D. student who exhibits exceptional commitment and promise in Animal Science and satisfies the graduate entrance requirements of both the Department and OSU.

Procedure: Selected by the Department Head via ANS Scholarship Committee.

Pacific Egg and Poultry Association for 2009-10 (Due: To be announced at a future date).

Awards for 2008-09 were announced at the Annual PEPA Meeting, March 6, 2008.

 

Awards: Number varies per year, ~$1,500, each


Purpose/Requirements: Promote and support graduate students studying poultry with the primary goal of helping the poult industry after graduation.

Class: Graduate

Procedure: Application forms can be downloaded from PEPA and are returned to the ANS Poultry Program, Withycombe 114 (Due: To be announced) for verification, endorsement, and submission to PePa. Selection is by the PePa Scholarship Committee and recipients announced at it's annual meeting.


Chester M. Wilcox Memorial Scholarships Applications Due: April 6, 2009

Award: One scholarship, approximately $9,200 (MS) or $10,200 (Ph.D.)


Purpose/Requirements: To support graduate students studying Poultry Science; US citizenship required; must meet graduate school and department's graduate requirements. A 0.2 FTE Graduate Research Assistantship is added to this award.

Class: Either one MS or one Ph.D. student or both

Procedure: Selected by the Department Head via ANS Scholarship Committee.
